Goro

Goro (ゴロ Goro) is a minor character of Genshi Shonen Ryu. He was Amra's estranged younger brother who resurfaced as a supposed "prophet" and manipulated the Alara Tribe using the Fire Stones.

After leaving behind his tribe for ten years, Goro returned where he was welcomed back by his brother. Claiming to have "power" from the gods, Goro seized the hearts of the Alara tribe by demonstrating his ability to lit his Fire Stones. Goro then challenged Amra to duel a Smilodon in single combat to prove himself worthy to remain as the Alara Tribe's chief. As he had hoped, Amra lost the duel and was therefore banished from the tribe. Claiming that disaster that will befall upon the tribe, Goro forced his brother's wife, Messa, to become the new chieftain, using her to control the tribe. Goro then had his nephew, Ben, be imprisoned for his defiance, straining the bond of Amra's family. Goro then had the injured Amra left for dead at the Mount of Death. Unbeknownst to him, however, Amra's life had been saved by strangers; The white-skin boy Ryu and his companions.

The next morning, Goro and his men managed to capture Ryu, who had sneaked into the village and had him imprisoned alongside Ben. Like many others, Goro considers Ryu's white skin a bad omen and plans to have him fed to the Smilodon. Before he could do so, however, both Ryu and Ben cooperated with each other and manage to escape. Goro had his men pursue the two boys, but Ryu valiantly stayed behind to keep Goro's men at bay, ensuring that Ben successfully escapes. Goro's men eventually managed to corner Ryu, but the boy manages to expose Goro as a fraud by lighting the Fire Stones that supposedly only Goro himself could lit. Goro's influence on the Alara Tribe had already gotten too strong, however, as the tribesmen were still believing Goro's lies, with the only exception being Messa. Goro then had Ryu thrown in to fight the Smilodon unarmed. Distracted with the duel, Goro didn't realize Messa had snuck behind him to take Ryu's shiv from him, throwing it to the boy who uses it to kill the Smilodon. Outraged by Messa's betrayal, Goro attacks her and threatened to have her executed along with Ryu. Ironically, Goro's own "prophecy" came true as the Tyranno arrived at the village shortly after. Goro and the others fled in terror as the dinosaur rampaged through the Alara tribe. Goro himself was then crushed to death by the Tyranno.

Trivia[]

  • Goro shares some similarities to Claudius from Shakespeare's play Hamlet who was a prince who murdered his brother the king for the sake of his throne. However, unlike Goro, Claudius had a kind side and genuinely believed that he could make the country a better place and was a highly competent king whereas Goro is manipulative, cowardly and evil. Unlike Claudius, instead of taking the role of Chieftain for himself, Goro gave it to Messa so that he could use her as his proxy.
  • His Fire Stones are most likely sulfur or coal as both types of rocks can catch fire.
