Messa

Messa (メッサ Messa) is a minor character of Genshi Shonen Ryu. She was the wife of Chief Amra and the mother of Ben.

Messa lived peacefully in the Alara Tribe alongside her husband and son until one day, Amra's long-lost brother Goro resurfaced. Challenging her husband's leadership through a supposed prophecy, Amra was forced to duel a Smilodon in order to remain as chieftain. Messa and Ben watched helplessly as Amra was overtaken by the beast, passing out in the process. Her husband ultimately lost and was therefore banished from the tribe. Goro forced Messa to serve him as the new chief of the Alara Tribe by threatening her that disaster will befall upon the tribe if she refuses. Ben tried to warn her that Goro was a fraud, but neither she nor the other tribesmen believed him. Messa was forced to watch her son be imprisoned for his defiance against Goro, much to her sadness. She later participated in Ryu's execution where Ryu managed to convince her that Goro was a fraud. During Ryu's duel with the Smilodon, Messa betrays Goro and snuck behind him, snatching the shiv and throwing it to Ryu, allowing him to kill the Smilodon. Goro attacked Messa and threatened to have her executed along with Ryu. Ironically, Goro's "prophecy" came true as the Tyranno arrived at the village shortly after. Messa and the others fled in terror as the dinosaur rampaged through the Alara tribe. When the Tyranno trapped Ryu and Ben in a narrow slit Messa returned to rescue her son, arming herself with a dead tribesman's spear. Drawing all her strength, Messa repeatedly stabbed the Tyranno's tail to draw it's attention to her while telling her son and Ryu to escape. Both Ben and Ryu managed to escape, but Messa herself was swept away by the Tyranno's powerful tail, sending her crashing into the ground. Ryu and Ben rushed to Messa's side, relieved to find her still alive and carried her to safety. Taking refuge in the jungle, Messa was tended by her husband and son. Upon hearing Ben's voice, Messa regains consciousness and reaches out to her son and the two embrace, happy that her family was reunited once again. Messa's courage renewed Ryu's views of a mother's love and convinced him to still look for his mother.

Appearance[]

Messa is a middle aged woman with peach skin, purple pupils, and long brown hair. Living in a tribal lifestyle, she wore a ripped maroon loincloth, exposing the area around her belly, fur skirt, a pair of fur boots, and like her husband, she also wore a tribal necklace made out of animal teeth or claws.

Voice Actors[]

  • Japanese dub: Reiko Seno

Trivia[]

  • Messa's appearance is similar to the cavewoman Loana, portrayed by Raquel Welch in the film One Million Years B.C.
  • In the Italian dub Messa is renamed Missia. In addition, her dialogues were slightly altered a bit when compared to the original Japanese dub.
    • Rather than blindly following Goro like in the original, Goro threatens to execute Ben if she did not submit to him.
    • When rescuing Ben and Ryu, she directly insults the Tyranno by calling it brutta bestiaccia, which is Italian for ugly beast.
  • Messa shares some similarities to Queen Gertrude from Shakespeare's play Hamlet who was Hamlet's mother who remained beside her husband's usurper, Claudius, and remained passive during his reign. Unlike Gertrude, Messa didn't remarry Goro and remained by his side out of fear for his prophecy. Rather than her own son Ben, Hamlet's hatred towards Gertrude was channeled through Ryu.
